OVERVIEW

European settlers in the 1800s mistook a grassy flood-plain near Naboomspruit to be the source of the Nile and named the river flowing out of the “Nyl Rivier”. Part of the 15,00 ha floodplain is now a nature reserve and birding paradise with around 400 species making their homes here. In the rainy season it becomes a wet wonderland when the perennial floodplain fills up and waterbirds flock here in their thousands.

On your bike

Terrain can be rather sandy in the western section of the reserve but otherwise you cycle on hardpack through the bushveld. Puncture proof your tyres! The flat terrain favours families and all levels of rider.

Off the bike

Pack your binoculars and your bird book. Game-viewing may also be done at the reserve.
