OVERVIEW

Nestling on the slopes of its very own mountain – the dramatic Kasteelberg – the quaint village of Riebeek-Kasteel is surrounded by wheat fields, vineyards and olive groves.

On your bike

A circular route option from Riebeek Kasteel includes a few sections of tarmac, but this is not the end of the world. Crank off from the Royal Hotel towards neighbouring Riebeek West, looking out for a good gravel road heading left into the Wamakers Valley.

From here, a network of farm roads take you onto Kasteelberg, allowing you to traverse this sizeable outcrop in a clockwise direction. It is a reasonable climb with solid road surface for most of the way, but expect lots of mud in winter.

Join the R46 and turn left for a tarmac run back into the village.

Off the bike

The Riebeek Valley, situated approximately an hour’s drive from Cape Town, is famous for its wines and olives and is home to several highly rated wineries and olive oil producers. During the olive harvesting season, guided tours of the oil presses can be arranged and the annual Olive Festival in May is not to be missed. A selection of activity, leisure, accommodation and restaurant options cater for every budget, taste and preference.
