OVERVIEW The core activity of Bokpoort is horse-riding, but mountain-biking is encouraged on a technical 12km trail, exclusively marked for mountain bikes. This trail is the steepest and most difficult part of the annual Clarens MTB Classic. By alternately pedaling and pushing your bicycle, it is possible to access the rock pool and waterfall on the property or take some time out to watch resident herds of springbok, black wildebeest, blesbok and mountain reedbuck. This is a very demanding circuit with potential for portage. A word of caution – do not attempt technical sections that are beyond your current sills level. On your bike From the reception area at 1,800 metres above sea level, you ascend via a series of ups and downs along an 8km jeep track to the Bush Camp at 1,950 metres above sea level. The 4km return is all downhill along one of the singletrack horse trails on offer at Bokpoort, and this is where you may have to portage, if your skills level is not sufficient deft to negotiate the rocks and radical gradients of the horse trail. Incredible views of the Maluti Mountains abound on this hike ‘n ride, providing a unique perspective of the ethereal sandstone geology of the area.By Road (102km): If the mountain bike trail terrified you onto a road bike, there is the most incredible piece of road cycling in the country here. Ride 68km from Clarens to Harrismith through the Golden gate National Park. Beautiful, smooth, cambered roads, with generous road shoulders and minimal traffic, will have body and soul simpl begging for more time on the bike. Off the bike Bokpoort Farm offers an art gallery and chapel for quieter pursuits, while the more active might try game-viewing, horse-riding, hiking, hunting, clay pigeon shooting and even archery. After a hot shower, relax in the pub before dining in the restaurant but beware of the infamous Bokpoort ‘Flaming Dragon’. The Golden Gate National Park is on your doorstep and nearby Clarens has arts and crafts and restaurants galore.
