[ OVERVIEW ]
On your bike
The imposing Voortrekker Monument was built in 1949 to commemorate the experience and culture of the nineteenth century Voortrekkers. On a clear day the monument can be seen from as far away as Krugersdorp in the West Rand.
It is possible to cycle circuits of under 3km and over 10km circuit in the nature reserve surrounding the monument. You’ll ride against a backdrop of panoramic views over Pretoria and Johannesburg. On the exposed upper slopes, indigenous protea trees grow between the grass and rocks while non-predatory game may be encountered at every turn. The lower slopes are shady and wooded. The route is predominantly jeep track but you may be diverted by some technical singletrack paths with steep uphills and tricky descents. Ride the contours to relax, or go straight up and down if you are here for self-flagellation.
Off your bike
Go horse-riding in the reserve or walk the Great Trek Commemoration Route. There’s sightseeing at the Voortrekker Monument, Fort Schanskop and the garden of Remembrance. Take a picnic or visit the restaurant. Ecological training classes are held on weekends.
