[ OVERVIEW ]
On your bike
This is an epic circuit of about 84km, consisting of 39km on tarred roads and 45km on dirt roads, and is brilliant endurance preparation for any MTB Classic. It is perfect terrain for crafty riders who have a full rigid ‘hybrid’ MTB with slicks and road bike gearing.
Turn left onto the road shoulder of the busy R560 from the Bird Store. Take the T4 dirt road to Hartbeesfontein in the North-West Province. Province. Look out for the tranquil little church on the right, which just happens to be the final resting place of Sir Ernest Oppenheimer’s second wife, Lady Caroline. This road ends up in the Remhoogte area, looping back to the R560. Cross the Magalies River, then turn left onto the R560. Just before the tar road takes a sharp turn into Skeerpoort, turn right onto the Hartbeeshoek dirt road and climb up a short pass over the mountains.
At the T-junction turn right onto a quiet tar road and ride back into Gauteng past Segwati Ranch and the CSIR Hartbeeshoek Satellite Tracking Station. At the T-junction with the R563 to Krugersdorp/Hekpoort, turn left, and then immediately right onto the next dirt road signposted ‘Orient’. After 9km, turn right at the Magaliesburg sign. Hereafter it’s a lovely roller coaster ride into the village past Valley Lodge. (This section is part of the Brait Grace to grace Corporate MTB race.) Finally, ride back to the start on tar along the Bekker Schools road and Goblin’s Cove.
Off your bike
Hot-air ballooning, horse trails, hiking, rock-climbing and game-viewing are just some ‘off the bike’ activities available in this area.
