[ OVERVIEW ]
On your bike
Routes start and end at the Gospel Express Train at Vinkrivier Station, approximately 10 km from Robertson. The circular ride starts off with a pleasant 5 km jaunt through the indigenous fynbos on jeep and singletrack while longer routes go the distance in excess of 60 km. Expect a mix of flat and fast jeep tracks traversing local vineyards, linking up every so often with superb stretches of singletrack. The rides up to 22 km are suitable for novices while the longer 28 km to 35 km routes will suit moderately fit riders.
The medium route, including the “Pain Jane Pass’ with 800 m of climbing and an altitude gain of 200 m, nudges into endurance territory. And then there’s the hard core rides of 55 km and 62 km which are only recommended for fit and experienced riders. Face up to the ‘Dare Devil Drop’ – a 100 m, extremely steep jeep track descent – and the now infamous BS&G (Blood, Sweat and Gears) Pass, a 2.2 km slog with an altitude gain of nearly 450 m.
Night riding with a full moon is a very pleasant option on the short and medium routes, as there are no city lights to spoil the full moon effect. On a good night a torch is not really required as the tracks are very well defined and marked.
Off your bike
Robertson has long been famous for delectable wine, beautiful gardens and country hospitality. Outdoor options in this ‘Valley of Wine and roses’ include horse-riding and hiking trails in Dassieshoek Nature Reserve, canoeing and fishing on the Breede River or a visit to the Birds of Paradise exotic bird centre. Wine tours on a variety of world-renowned estates, as well as a visit to a local brandy distillery, will further expand your mind.
