OVERVIEW

For the Kogelberg route, bookings are essential through Maverick Cycles and permits will cost you R30 per adult. For the Palmiet trail R20 per adult and R10 per child is payable at the Oudebosch office of the Kogelberg Nature Reserve.

On your bike

The route starts at the Mispah Youth Camp, situated next to Kogelberg Dam. Enter the trail from Mispah Camp by heading south along the gravel road for 800m. Where the road swings left you will find a split-pole with an apple market indicating a right turn onto a bush track. Note that this is private property.

Follow the route markers which meander across open lands and into the fynbos and onto a jeep track following the main power line for approximately 5 km south. The vegetation becomes thicker and the road sandier, with steep and very rough sections.

At the half-way mark, a sign indicates the direction of the Palmiet River and you kick straight into a steep climb. Look for the next marker on your right and follow the singletrack through stands of fynbos and into the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Take care along the rocky downhill section blasting onto Stokoei Bridge on the Palmiet. From here, you ride as per the Kogelberg Trail, following the jeep track adjacent to the river for 13 km to the Nature Conservation Offices. Another 4 km of gravel road takes you onto the tarmac, where you turn left towards Kleinmond

HOW TO GET THERE

Travel along the N2 from Cape Town past Somerset West to opposite the Grabouw turnoff within the foothills of Sir Lowry's Pass. The access road to Mispah Youth Camp exits onto the highway here.

If heading for the Oudebosch office, follow the N2 to Bkt river before turning onto the R44 towards Kleinmond. Kogelberg Nature Reserve is 3 km west of Kleinmond just off the Main Road of Betty’s Bay.
