OVERVIEW Waterval Boven is an old railway town situated on the edge of the Escarpment on the banks of the Elands River in Mpumalanga, roughly 260km form Johannesburg. On your bike The mountain biking from the camp site is absolutely awesome, no other way to describe it! Immediately opposite the camp is a section of single track that takes you up into a large forested area, through the forest and back down the slope after exiting the forest. This entire single track flows beautifully, especially through the forest. Coming down the meandering “snaking” single track after exiting the forest is a blast. Fast, sometimes very steep and spectacular views when you get a chance to take your eyes off the trail. After this track, you cross the district road and make your way onto an equally enjoyable, but slightly more difficult single track. Running along the edge of a cliff for almost all or the way, this section of track will also take your breath away. You will encounter some fairly tricky rocky drop offs and some tricky technical sections but nothing to serious. Off the bike Situated in the hills behind the town of Waterval Boven is a campsite known as Tranquilitas. This campsite also includes self-catering chalets, a swimming pool, rock climbing wall, picnic areas and some of the most amazing views of the area. There are also ablution facilities and cleaning up areas/communal sinks, all you really need if you go as a day visitor. There is no shop/kiosk.

TERRAIN: Forest trails, 4X track and technical single track, bridges MAP: Just ask Gustav for a old school map af the trails. CELL RECEPTION: Intermittent. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Riders: R20 FACILITIES: Safe parking Basic accommodation options: Chalets, permanent tented camps and camping with clean and neat ablutions. BEWARE OF: Be aware of the rocks on the Rim Trail, can get very hot so stay hydrated. |
